Three exposures through three filters, carried across an empire. Browse 2,601 Library of Congress catalog records from Prokudin-Gorsky’s survey of the Russian Empire, including 1,897 modern color renderings and composites of his glass negatives.
Between about 1905 and 1915, photographer and scientist Sergey M. Prokudin-Gorsky documented people, cities, architecture, industry, agriculture, and transportation. His three black-and-white exposures recorded color information through separate filters. The Library of Congress later produced digital color renderings and composites from the surviving glass negatives; album prints remain searchable here as metadata and images but are not added to the Early Color results.
